Introduction by Maike: ‘Speculation and world building are common projects of architecture and science fiction, often taking the shape of a utopia or dystopia. In my reflection on the relationship between bodies and space, I’ve been looking at feminist science fiction as a tool for architectural critique. How is architecture built within these worlds that challenge social constructions of gender and sexuality? In relation to the current pandemic, boundaries of the spaces we live in have shifted or dissolved. Home has become workplace, leisure space, school and more as lines blur. In the process of designing a house/building, rooms or areas are divided by program. The imagined use of each area informs the overall spatial arrangement, reflecting certain norms, values and conventions of design and society. In the presentation of text-in-progress I question if the sudden reformulation of space can open possibilities of new methods of space-making — by looking at feminist science fiction that moves away from a utopia or dystopia to something-in-between — stories that understand identities as shifting, contradictory or incomplete‘

Introduction by Danja: ‘Politics of Somatic Architecture is an ongoing project, in which I look at the discursive and performative investigation of architectures from a queer perspective. For this encounter, I am presenting Politics of Somatic Architecture: LINE, a performative reading, where perceptions of reality meet in a spatial form of concept. Through the text I explore space as a narrative of closeness and distance, shared experience and as a way of experimenting with the perception of the present through the line. This text pays attention to how the present unfolds itself almost like a negotiation between belief sets, thinking patterns and narratives. By looking closely at social micro-phenomena that constitute the ‘I’ and ‘the Other’, the performative reading proposes a speculative interrogation of how social fabrics are woven and their patterns designed.’
