Essay: ‘The Yellow Pages’ aka ‘Oslo–Bergen (excerpt)’ — a pre-print, by Tony Cokes & Tine Semb
Papers / IGWTLI publishing
Description

‘Oslo–Bergen (excerpt). A conversation in bits and pieces, more or less accurate quotations, some slightly altered.’ is a teaser from an ongoing written collaborating between American video artist and Karmaklubb* organiser that started late summer 2018 and went on till March 2019. This work later became the book ↗︎ Polar Green (Mikrohaus ++). This text contains excerpts from four shorter essays on nonbinary thinking, sampling and hybrids, displacement, and more. Very enjoyable. Find a few fragments below.

For the collaboration it started with an exploration of Tony Cokes’ film Mikrohaus, or the black atlantic? (2006–2008), the first part of the Karmaklubb* ↗︎ ‘Talks & screenings (on various forms of queerness)’-programme that launched October 2018. Its has later evolved into an ongoing writing dialogue, a series of discursive events, as well as ↗︎ a solo exhibition with Cokes, curated by Karmaklubb* at Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, March 2019.

The alternative title, The Yellow Pages, is a heritage from the draft and explains itself well as it is from the colour on the paper, Factory Yellow. ↗︎ The image being used is of Cezinando, by ↗︎ Maria Pasenau, 2017. Courtesy of Warner Music. You can get the beauty ↗︎ here. It is in English, even.

↗︎ The snake-place, cracking nonbinary codes …

Natural wine and “best pizza in town”. Bergen-rap from the speakers. Bergen-rap has been ‘the shit’ for a while. Bergen is large enough to have a vital scene. Small enough to blend. The result is rather slick, schizophrenic. Touch of house, even rave.

The speakers smoothly fading to an Oslo youngster. He likes to wear pink, and makeup. Also, he used to dance ballet. And he is sweet. He has participated in various family-friendly television programs, nationwide, prime time. The girls like him. The guys too. Even the mothers, and grandmothers. And somehow, he seems to be accepted by the hip hop scene too, but who knows what is true. I’m thinking it’s a mystery, but a good one.

I show a few images to C on my iPhone. The photos of the young man naked, shot by another young and super-super-hip photographer. Another image: The same skinny boy in a very tight, half transparent top (or is it a dress?) patterned with flowers. A bit of makeup, and his mouth slightly open, his eyes narrow.

↗︎ This could have been from a gay magazine.

↗︎ The yellow book

Words are never neutral.

Images are never neutral.

Neither is sound.

Aesthetics in general are never neutral.

A tiny book with the shape of a travel guide. Suitable for a set of average sized hands, a pocket. It is printed on solid ↗︎ Colorplan Factory Yellow paper, 135 and 270 grams. The same yellow as used in night clubs. On signs, various displays. OFO (one font only): ↗︎ Helvetica, black.

A: Helvetica is a democratic typeface. In the hands of everyone, amateurs. It works well on screens too. It’s beyond typographic style. It signifies rational communication.

B: Everyone knows the name of typefaces, like Helvetica. But do they know the name of any female typographers? One?

C: I don’t believe in total objectivity. I’ve thought about this, a lot. I kind of like generic things. So often the default has certain associations and assumptions built into it, like ‘objectivity’.

[…]

S: After a certain amount of repetition you ‘empty’ what might be left of stylish distractions. The content gets more visible. I like that you repeat yourself.

C: Yes, me too. Again, it’s a question around the duration, or the exhaustiveness of it. It’s like that feeling ‘oh, no — it’s not over yet …’

On non-visibility

Has something happened unless you have evidence to prove it? Is the image trustworthy material? Has it ever been?

Like, could you use found information to tell about a place without actually visiting it?

Or, training for a certain situation, as opposed to live through it?

Make it like ‘a dream’, make it like a video game. More sufficient killing.
