Virtual smoke signals, 5th: Dahir Doni — live DJ set and mix tape
Soundscape
Virtual space
Description

Dahir Doni aka Skinnyontheroof is a multimedia artist and DJ raised in Mogadishu, Somalia now based in Oslo, Norway and founder of the forward-thinking collective ↗︎ ONKOD, which are on a conquest to bring contemporary sounds of the south of the equator from the slums, salons, plazas into the club and with that redefining the Oslo nightlife scene. Dahir's influences are rooted in uptempo African rhythms such as Kuduru, Gqom, Batida, and Afro Tech recklessly combined in with house and techno tropes with some DIY elements to reveal a new and confrontational personality, setting free both body and speech. Dahir we love. And he came more or less directly from Kulturhuset with Karmaklubb* #32 to join us in virtual space. Latest update from Dahir: ‘[I will play] obscure stuff from south of equator. Radio style.’ Yes, please. Very hot. For sure. Love to Ingenstds for collaborating on the streaming of K* VSS5.

PLEASE NOTE: Most of the sound material is rare and unique and not studio recordings. Exclusiveness. Second: This is a raw recording as everything crashed. A bit rough (let’s just call it authentic). Just ... join us IRL.

A specially made mix tape:

Endnotes

Dear beloved friends of Karmaklubb*. We have started to telecommunicating live, in desperation and frustration, in lack of being able to do what we live for: gather people IRL. Operating on distance will never be our preferred method. It feels like putting on a dress when you do not want to. The neon claw cannot shine and paint the room green. Neither can we talk or dance together. Not kiss. But, over the next weeks, perhaps months (please, let us hope not!) a selection of ‘virtual smoke signals’ will take place: DJ sets, followed by concerts, sound productions, podcasts, talks, and more — hopefully making us both happier and smarter, ‘thought and pleasure’ — served by the most generous and trusted beings. Dahir is one of those amazing people, too. Queerness, joy, and love. We still believe 2020 will be a good year. ↗︎ You can also ↗︎ read about the VSS here in ↗︎ MELK↗︎ ’s↗︎ ↗︎ online edition, in Norwegian.

For nerds
telecommunication (n.): 1932, from French “télécommunication” (see “tele-” [far, far off, operating over distance] + “communication” [act of communicating, act of imparting, discussing, debating, conferring]). Source: Online Etymology Dictionary. The icon of the lifebuoy — at SoundCloud and such — with light, smoke, and line is normally used as a nautical safety sign. Very symbolic, yes.
