McKenzie Wark: On ‘Molecular Red’, in collaboration with Existenz Forlag
Thought & pleasure
Trekanten, Oslo
Description

On its 10th anniversary, will publish a Norwegian translation of McKenzie Wark’s visionary book, ↗︎ Molecular Red: A Theory for the Anthropocene (2015). As a preamble, we invite you to revisit this classic of contemporary theory with the author, exploring it within the wider context of her work, including conceptual critiques such as ↗︎ A Hacker Manifesto (2004) and ↗︎ Gamer Theory (2007).
A revival of half-forgotten Soviet thinkers like Platonov and Bogdanov, Molecular Red is truly what the latter would call a ‘Science of the Future’, including lost futures and futures to be revived in radical and Martian red science fiction—as well as in a very real politics for a perturbed Planetary Age.
Celebrated by critical theorists like Žižek and Haraway, as well as by the Californian climate fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson, Molecular Red opens up a vista for rethinking the Anthropocene in the light of the possible futures of our recent past. As Wark revisits her seminal book and the questions of utopias and dystopias and their role in culture wars, she will also discuss it in the context of recent writings and world events in conversation with , Editor-in-Chief of Le Monde diplomatique.

Endnotes

Since 2018, Karmaklubb* has organized several international discursive events, screenings, artist presentations, facilitated artistic and theoretical research as well as published texts focusing on spaces—physically, virtual, hybrid—that allows senses of freedom; where hierarchies dissolve and categories vanish, for something else to form. There are many keys: Art can be one, clubbing too, or writing. ↗︎ Our first encounter was with American artist Tony Cokes’ video work Mikrohaus, or the black atlantic? (2018), while one of the most recent outcomes: ↗︎ a week-long festival with Australian thinker and writer McKenzie Wark, taking place at Trekanten, Det Norske Teatret, and MUNCH, followed by a celebration at Black Box teater, Oslo.
